2014 Owners Conference Sets Attendance Record

More than 148 NPOA members, associate members, and vendors turned out for NPOA's 2014 Owner's Conference in Fort Lauderdale, FL, on Feb. 27 through Mar. 2, 2014. The conference was outstanding in all respects, with many attendees asking us, "How do you guys expect to top this conference next year?"

Approximately sixty-five conference attendees showed up on Wednesday, Feb. 26th in order to take advantage of NPOA's special tie-in with the Graphics of the Americas Expo in Miami Beach. The show was an added bonus for attendees, who were provided free transportation and admission to the show.

The conference officially kicked-off on Friday morning with an upbeat, high-energy keynote presentation by Warren Werbitt of Pazazz Printing from Montreal, and it got even better as the day progressed. An outstanding presentation by Gina Testa of Xerox and the return of popular industry veteran Larry Hunt finished out the morning's schedule.

After a great lunch that found many participants venturing out to the veranda to soak up some much needed sun, attendees returned to the meeting rooms and listened to Mike Stevens share some inspirational thoughts that helped to guide him during his many years in the printing industry.

Following Mike Stevens was a thought-provoking presentation by web to print guru Jennifer Matt, who provided practical solutions for evolving and adapting many of the lessons now popular in the web-to-print world.

Saturday followed on the heels of the successful kick-off on Friday with a presentation by NPOA's Executive Director John Stewart. Stewart shared his insights regarding how to value a small-to-medium size business and the steps needed to increase value as owners approach retirement. That session was immediately followed by a panel of highly successful retired printers (Howard Kack, Steve Minta, and Randy Daly) who shared their experiences, how they planned for retirement well in advance, and the lessons they learned along the way.

Just before the lunch break on Saturday, James Harmon, a highly regarded expert on the Affordable Healthcare Act, walked the audience through the maze of the new health insurance regulations, including facts and figures that many in the audience acknowledged they did not know. The presentation was highly praised, regardless of participants' personal opinions of the new legislation.

Following lunch, David King, one of the most knowledgeable experts in the sign industry, shared with the audience what to buy, what stay away from, and how to run a highly profitable sign operation. "Pricing for Profitability in Large Format" was packed with useful information for both old-timers as well as attendees just now considering entering this field.

Saturday's business breakout sessions dealt with wide format, mailing services, and web-to-print, featuring once again David King, Jennifer Matt, Mark Rheaume, Tom Crooks, John Leininger, and Sean McGettigan.

Saturday's events ended with a special "Havana Nights" farewell reception featuring Latin music, tropical drinks, a cigar roller, lots of printers sharing ideas, and the warmth of tropical Florida. Overlooking a lake, the scene was the perfect way to end the conference, although the next morning featured two informative user group meetings hosted by both PrintSmith and Printers Plan.
